Dam Square Apartment 1 Location
|
You are located in the very heart of the city. The Dam Square is considered to be the historical heart of the city of Amsterdam. Dating back to the 13th century the Dam is named after a dam that was built in the river Amstel. From that time on the city expanded around this place to what it is today. The Dam Square offers you a few interesting buildings such as the Royal Palace and the New Church. But also it is used for many open air events and the national Remembrance Day for those who lost their lives in WW 2. From this location you can walk almost anywhere you like in the city centre. The city centre of Amsterdam is relatively small compared to other popular European cities. This is because Amsterdam was one of the first large cities in early modern Europe and in early times they already experienced that too many people together on one place creates a lot of problems with health etc. So therefore in the 17th and 18th century remigration from the cities was already stimulated in the Netherlands. Still there is enough to be seen. Walk to the Museum Square where you will find the impressive Rijksmuseum that hold a large collection of works made by Dutch masters like Rembrandt en Vermeer. Right next to the Rijksmuseum you can visit the Van Gogh Museum, holding the largest collection in the world of this painter.
