You will find the Laurierdwarsstraat Apartment located in the famously pretty Jordaan district of Amsterdam. The area is jam packed with a delightful array of shops, boutiques, restaurants and atmospheric laid back cafes. Why not visit the nearby organic food market on the Noordemarkt where you are likely to find some delicious ingredients for cooking with back at the apartment.

Most surely the prettiest neighbourhood in the city, the Canal Belt is located just seconds away from the apartment. This famous district is made up of four great canals that loop around the historic city centre like an ornamental necklace. These beautiful waterways were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010 as they are considered to be of great architectural and historical importance. It is shocking to learn that the characteristic leaning houses in the area narrowly missed being demolished altogether in the 1970s when many buildings had run into disrepair following the war and controversial plans were made to build a huge road to connect the city with outlying areas. Following much campaigning and actual street battles with local residents, politicians and police the area was eventually saved and the road was never built. Unfortunately much of the nearby Jewish district, the Waterlooplein, had been already destroyed to make way for the controversial Metro development.  

The nearby Prinsengracht is home to Holland’s most visited museum, the Anne Frank House. Simply follow the canal north or clockwise and you will find it in the beautiful Westermarkt area at number 263. Here you can learn about Anne and her family and friends’ lives in the tiny rooftop annexe where they hid from the Nazi regime during the occupation of the country until their unfortunate discovery. Climb through the secret doorway into their hide-away and read Anne’s actual diary and notes on display here. The museum offers an incredibly moving and though provoking insight into the history of ‘tolerance’ around the world and encourages visitors to consider their own actions in the future.
