Besiktas is a municipality of Istanbul and located on the shores of the Bosphoros. This neighborhood gives its name to Turkey‘s oldest sport club. This club’s football team is very popular and belongs to the top 3 strongest teams in Turkey. In this municipality you can visit a famous palace called the Dolmabahce Palce. This palace served as the main administrative centre of the Ottoman Empire from 1856 to 1922. It was built between 1843 and 1856 by two architects, the Balyan brothers. The Ottoman sultans resided in this palace and they wanted to show the rest of Europe their power and wealth. The design contains elements form Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical styles blended with traditional Ottoman architecture. The world’s largest Bohemian chrystal chandelier is in the central hall and was a gift from Queen Victoria of England. Istanbul is one of the oldest cities in the world and it has now about 13,5 million inhabitants. Founded in 660 before Christ by the Greeks and it was called Byzantium in those days. For nearly 16 centuries it served as the capital of different empires. As Constantinople it was the capital of the Roman Empire from 330 to 395, the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) from 395 to 1453. As Istanbul it was the capital of the Ottoman Empire from 1453 to 1922. So this city has a rich history with many historic remains from the different empires. |
