This apartment is close to the Noordeindestraat. This street has small shops and boutiques and it is a cozy street to do some shopping. Another street with boutiques is the Hoogstraat. If you want to shop in bigger stores or warehouse then you can go to the Spuistraat or the Grote Markt.

The Hague is the city of the Indonesian culture and food. From 1948 to 1951 many people from our former colony, the Dutch Indies, came back to Holland when Indonesia became independent. Most of these Indos came to The Hague and settled here.  The Hague has many more excellent Indonesian restaurants. It has the oldest Indonesian restaurant, The Tampat Senang, in Holland dating back to 1922. Try some Indonesian food like Babi Pagang (roasted pig) with nasi or white rice. Babi Pagang is probably the most sold and popular dish in Holland. Every Dutchman knows these two Indonesian words.

Another kind of food which is also popular in The Netherlands is the raw herring. Vlaggetjesdag or Flags Day, which takes place every year in June in Scheveningen, celebrates the first ships that reach the harbor with nieuwe haring or new herring. These herrings are salted and put in barrels on board of the ship. The first barrel is auctioned for lots of money and this money goes to charity.  When the new herring arrives, many Dutch get excited and want to taste one as soon as possible and they will eat it as follows: dip the raw, salted herring in sliced onions, grab the tail of the herring, lift up the hand, drop the herring slowly into your mouth.
