The inner city of Delft is beautiful with its canals and the old, 17th century monumental house with different kinds of gables. The famous Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer lived and worked in Delft. Vermeer is the founder of the Delft School which is known for its images of domestic life, views of households, church interiors, courtyards, squares and streets of Delft. Other painters who belonged to the Delft School were Pieter de Hoogh, Niclolaes Maes and Carel Fabritius. They also produced paintings showing historic events, flower paintings and portraits of important people like the rich merchants and members of the House of Orange. The Binnenhof means in Dutch the inner court and it a complex of buildings. It has been the location of the meetings of the Dutch parliament, the Staten-Generaal, since 1446. It started on this place when in the 13th century the count of Holland, Floris V, built his mansion next to a lake. You can still see this lake, it is called the Hofvijver.
