The Lange Voorhout is an old street and it dates back to 1404 when the Dominican monks built a monastery church. This church has been modified over the centuries and it is still on the Lange Voorhout. The Kloosterkerk is a protestant church and it is the church which Queen Beatrix attends. This street is also known for its lime trees and some of these trees were planted in 1536 by the emperor Charles V. The Escher Museum is located in the former Lange Voorhout Palace and it features the work of the Dutch graphical artist Escher. The two oldest buildings in The Hague are the Grote or St. Jacobs Church and the Binnenhof. This church was originally a wooden church in the 13th century. In 1335 this church was finally rebuilt with stones and in the Middle Ages this took 30 to 40 years to accomplish. Go inside and see the old organ made in 1760. The Binnenhof means in Dutch the inner court and it a complex of buildings. It has been the location of the meetings of the Dutch parliament, the Staten-Generaal, since 1446. Count Floris V of Holland built his mansion in the 13th century next to a little lake that still exists today and is now called the Hofvijver or the Court Pond.
