But this laan or lane also has the oldest Indonesian restaurant of the Netherlands, the Tempat Senang, translated in English the place where you feel good. It opened in 1922. The Hague has many more excellent Indonesian restaurants because it has a large Indo population of Dutch and Indonesians like Javanese or Moluccans or of mixed race who came to Holland in 1947-50 from the former colony called the Dutch Indies. Try the rijstafel (rice table) with sate (pieces of meat on a stick) of this kitchen because it is delicious and very popular in the Netherlands. With the bus it will take you about 10 minutes to get to Scheveningen, the beautiful beach resort. On New Year’s Day many Dutch come to this beach and take a dive in the sea. This town is a typical Dutch fisher’s place where they catch herring. On Vlaggetjesdag of in English Flags Day which takes place in June and it celebrates the first ships that reach the harbor with nieuwe haring or new herring. These herrings are salted and put in barrels on board of the ship. The first barrel is auctioned for lots of money and this money goes to charity. When the new herring arrives, many Dutch get excited and want to taste one as soon as possible.
