Utrecht, the city in the heart of the Netherlands, is the fourth largest city of the Netherlands. The old inner-city is famous for its unique canals where many wharves, nice restaurants and cosy bars are located. The city centre still preserves many Medieval structures, historical buildings and ofcourse the Dom tower.
Domtoren (RonDom) The Dom Tower (Cathedral Tower, Dutch: Domtoren) of Utrecht is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, at 112.5 metres (368 feet) in height, and the Gothic-style tower is the symbol of the city.
RonDom, visitor centre for cultural history The tower has its own visitor centre, RonDom, which is located at Domplein, the oldest square in Utrecht. As well as stocking a range of souvenirs, they organise a number of activities centred on the tower, including regular guided tours which allow people to climb the 465 steps to the top of the Dom Tower. On a clear day it is possible to see both Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The booking office for guided tours is located in the square at the foot of the tower.
De Oudegracht The “old canal” or Oudegracht runs through the centre of Utrecht, starting from the city’s southeast side, reconnecting to the main stream of the Rhine to form a medieval moat around the old fortified town, then branching off into the centre of the city. The water level of the Oudegracht is below street level, with many wharfs and ancient cellars housing cafés and intriguing shops. The Oudegracht and its branching waterways have pedestrian walkways on either side with plenty of cafes along the way.
